The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached the Round of 16, and the race for the Golden Boot is as exciting as the battle for the team trophy.
The Golden Boot goes to the player who scored the most goals during the World Cup tournament.
So far, Lionel Messi of defending champion Argentina and Kylian Mbappe of France lead the scoring charts, while Norway’s Erling Haaland and England’s Harry Kane remain within touching distance.

Mbappe scored the lone goal on Saturday, July 4, as France defeated Paraguay, 1-0, to join Morocco, a 3-0 winner over Canada, in the World Cup quarterfinals.
Because Mbappe has two assists to Messi’s zero, Mbappe technically leads the race for the Golden Boot. But the French star, who won the 2022 Golden Boot by scoring eight goals, has played one more game than the 2022 Golden Ball winner. Messi and Argentina play their Round of 16 game against Egypt on Tuesday.
Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde has been one of the tournament’s standout matches. Messi opened the scoring and reached 20 career World Cup goals, while extending several World Cup records. Cape Verde refused to back down, equalizing twice before Diney Borges’ unfortunate own goal in the 111th minute sealed Argentina’s place in the Round of 16 against Egypt.

France also looks like a genuine title contender. Spain continues to impress with Mikel Oyarzabal in fine scoring form, while Haaland has carried Norway to its first knockout victory. England captain Harry Kane has again delivered on the biggest stage, keeping pace in the Golden Boot race. Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, also remains among the tournament’s biggest attractions, with the veteran continuing to add to his remarkable World Cup legacy.
1. Kylian Mbappe (France): 7 goals
Kylian Mbappe tied Messi after scoring on a penalty in the 70th minute on Saturday. He put on a clinical masterclass on Wednesday, scoring two goals to guide France to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32. Mbappe has scored 10 all-time goals in World Cup knockout stages.
2. Lionel Messi (Argentina): 7 goals
Messi scored his seventh goal against Cape Verde in the Round of 32. He opened the tournament with a stunning hat trick against Algeria, added two more against Austria and one against Jordan. With the win against Cape Verde, Messi set an all-time record of most FIFA World Cup appearances with 30.
3. Erling Haaland (Norway): 5 goals
Haaland scored the winning goal against Ivory Coast to send Norway into the Round of 16. Norway’s next test is Brazil on Sunday, and Haaland remains one of the strongest contenders for the Golden Boot. Interestingly, Norway is the only nation in football history to have played Brazil multiple times without losing to them (two wins, two draws).
4. Harry Kane (England): 5 goals
Kane has delivered in crucial moments, including a brace against DR Congo after earlier goals against Croatia and Panama. In the Round of 32, Kane headed a 75th minute equalizer to rescue his team single-handedly. He has extended his record as England’s highest goal scorer, moving up to 13 career World Cup goals. England’s captain has once again shown why he thrives in major tournaments. England faces Mexico on Sunday night, and Kane is well placed to challenge the tournament leaders.
5. Ousmane Dembele (France): 4 goals
Dembele is having the best run of his football career. He boosted his tally with a hat trick against Norway and contributed two assists during France’s campaign. His partnership with Mbappe has been one of the tournament’s most dangerous. Dembele won the 2025 Men’s Ballon d’Or and a consecutive Champions League crown with PSG.
6. Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain): 4 goals
Oyarzabal scored braces against Saudi Arabia and Austria to reach four goals. After a frustrating performance in a scoreless draw against Cape Verde, Oyarzabal bounced back in the group phase by scoring a clinical brace in a comfortable win against Saudi Arabia. His stellar performance against Austria was his career-defining moment, two goals to guide his nation to a 3-0 win. Spain’s Round of 16 clash against Portugal on Monday gives him another chance to climb the Golden Boot standings.
7. Vinicius Junior (Brazil): 4 goals
Vinicius Jr. has scored four goals and continues to lead Brazil’s attack with his pace and finishing. Operating under coach Carlo Ancelotti, the Real Madrid superstar has racked an assist along with his four goals. Vini scored in Brazil’s Group C games against Morocco, Haiti and Scotland. Brazil prepares to face Norway on Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium, and another productive outing could put him firmly back in the Golden Boot race.
