World Cup holders Argentina continue preparations for the 2026 tournament with a friendly fixture against Iceland.
The world champions take on Iceland at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama. It’s the final warm-up fixture before Argentina commence the defence of their title against Algeria on June 17th. La Albiceleste also face Austria and Jordan in Group J.
Argentina team news
Emi Martinez continues his recovery from a broken finger but could be given additional time to recover. The Aston Villa goalkeeper has been nursing the issue, with Juan Musso poised to continue in goal.
Lionel Messi remained an unused substitute against Honduras after a recent hamstring issue and head coach Lionel Scaloni will take a cautious approach with his talisman. The 38-year-old remains Argentina’s key figure, even in the twilight of his career.
In his absence, Lautaro Martinez is likely to be looked towards for goals, with support from Thiago Almada and Giuliano Simeone. Elsewhere, Cristian Romero and Julian Alvarez have recovered from recent injuries and could be handed much needed minutes.
Romero featured from the bench in the 2-0 win against Honduras after two months out at club level, while Alvarez has been dealing with an ongoing ankle problem. The Atletico Madrid forward was not in the squad for Argentina’s first warm-up game.
Argentina predicted lineup
Argentina predicted XI: Musso; Giay, Romero, Martinez, Tagliafico; Simeone, Mac Allister, Fernandez, Gonzalez; Martinez, Almada.
When will the match kick off?
The match will kick off at 2am BST on Wednesday 9th June.
