Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber has been ruled out of the 2026 World Cup through injury.

Timber missed Arsenal’s final six games of the Premier League season through injury, though did return as a substitute in the club’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

He was named in the Netherlands group for the tournament. However, it has been determined that Timber has not sufficiently recovered from a groin issue and he will play no part this summer.

The 24-year-old has now been sent home from the Dutch camp, with Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida named as his replacement.

“Jurriën Timber misses the 2026 World Cup. The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner,” a statement from the Dutch national team said.

“In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan. We’re all with you, Jurrien.”
