Van Bommel takes on his first international managerial role after successful spells at club level.
The former Netherlands captain has previously managed PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp, where he guided the Belgian club to a historic league and cup double during the 2022–23 season.
Belgium will hope Van Bommel can guide the Red Devils into a new era as they begin preparations for UEFA Euro 2028 qualification and continue rebuilding the national team.
Belgium’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended in the quarter-finals, with the Red Devils showing flashes of quality before eventually falling short against Spain.
Van Bommel’s appointment represents a new chapter for Belgium as they look to build on the achievements of their golden generation while developing a team capable of competing among the world’s best.
