FIFA President Gianni Infantino was already under pressure from the footballing world for his plan to sell a stake in the World Cup.
Infantino is now facing even more scrutiny for failing to fulfil a promise he made to the 2026 World Cup host cities.
The summer tournament had 16 venues across North America, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami and eight other US cities.
FIFA promised to make $1 million contributions to each US city, but they have still not been paid three weeks after the final.
US World Cup host cities want $1m payments
Gianni Infantino announced before last year’s Club World Cup that the 11 host cities would each receive $1 million.
The payments were described as “legacy contributions” and would go towards building football pitches and other social projects.
The Athletic has reported that the US cities for this year’s World Cup were also told they would receive the same $1 million.
Although FIFA never made a public commitment, host cities were “repeatedly assured” the payments would be made.
However, the cities have still not received any payments or updates on the situation despite the World Cup finishing last month.
The hosts are particularly baffled by FIFA’s refusal to pay them $1 million each, given that their annual revenues are in the billions.
Infantino now has another issue to fix as pressure mounts on his FIFA presidency after the World Cup.
