FIFA will investigate Argentina over what happened after the whistle in the national team's 2026 World Cup final loss to Spain
“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents.”
After the final whistle of the match, which resulted in Spain winning 1-0, a brawl broke out between players. Tensions were running high throughout the match, and it came to a head after the game ended.
Argentina's Leandro Paredes appeared to grab Spain's Eric García by the throat, and then other players were pushing, shoving and tripping.
It was a quick scuffle as Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni came in to break up the commotion.
Replay shows Paredes then going after Spain's Gavi and shoving him to the turf.
If FIFA's investigation determines that Paredes did administer a chokehold as the video makes it seem, it would result in an automatic red card being applied.
The organization is expected to "review the referee's reports, official match documentation and video footage before deciding whether any sanctions are warranted."
Argentina defender Nahuel Molina is also expected to be under investigation for his actions confronting Spain captain Rodri during the incident. Assistant coach Robert Ayala could also be looked into after allegedly being involved in an altercation with Dani Olmo.
