More than 11million Brits are now under a hosepipe ban as the drought risk continues to grow during the country's longest heatwave on record.

Ad

Five water companies have imposed usage restrictions in recent days affecting customers across southern and eastern England as strain on supplies intensifies.

The ban comes as the Met Office recorded six separate days of temperatures hitting 35C or higher for the first time.

The latest water firm to impose a ban is Affinity Water, which has 3.9million customers and confirmed today it would introduce measures for its central region from July 17 - covering Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Surrey and parts of London.

People in those areas will not be able to use hosepipes for watering their garden, washing cars, outdoor areas or windows or filling up swimming or paddling pools.

Anglian Water, Cambridge Water, South East Water and Southern Water have already announced bans as temperature records have tumbled, with highs of 36C today.

Thames Water, with 16million customers, and Yorkshire Water, with 5.7million, are both urging people to stop using hosepipes - although neither has imposed a ban.

The UK is stuck in its third heatwave of the year with scorching conditions leading to early harvests as well as wider impacts on health, energy, wildfire risks and transport.

Officials fear the risk of drought conditions is rising and have been keeping a close watch on East Anglia, Devon and Cornwall, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Water minister Emma Hardy met with bosses last week to discuss their preparedness for a hot summer as water firms scramble to manage increasingly tight resources.

Meanwhile another record tumbled yesterday when the UK had its eighth day at or above 34C in a calendar year, breaking the previous high of seven days set in the summers of 1976 and 2020. A ninth day of 34C-plus heat was recorded on Friday.

The Met Office also confirmed today that 2026 is the first time that temperatures of 35C or higher have been recorded in May, June and July of the same year.

Affinity Water: A hosepipe ban for its central region highlighted in orange will begin on July 17

Anglian Water: A hosepipe ban for five million customers in eastern England begins tomorrow

Southern Water: A hosepipe ban for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is in force from today

South East Water: A ban for Kent began last Friday, with others asked to reduce water use

Cambridge Water: A hosepipe ban for the firm's 350,000 customers will begin on July 17

Thames Water: All customers have been asked not to use hosepipes, but no ban is in place

Yorkshire Water: Customers are told to 'use a watering can instead of a hose where you can'

Affinity explained that the region has seen a continued pattern of hot, dry weather and demand for water is 20 per cent higher than would normally be expected.

The company said it is currently receiving less water than usual from Grafham Water reservoir, which would usually provide around 10 per cent of the region's supply.

While Affinity can take a set amount of water each year from the environment, such as rivers and underground aquifers – the firm said it is at risk of demand exceeding what its licence allows it to supply, which would put further strain on local water sources and increase the risk of disruption to customers in the coming months.

Hosepipe bans and requests from firms

Anglian Water: Hosepipe ban for five million customers across eastern England begins at 1am tomorrow

Affinity Water: Hosepipe ban across its central region from July 17, covering Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Surrey and parts of London. Company has a total of 3.9million customers.

Southern Water: Hosepipe ban for one million people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, in force from today

South East Water: Hosepipe ban for 850,000 people in Kent, in force since last week. People in Hampshire and Sussex asked to reduce water use

Cambridge Water: Hosepipe ban for its 350,000 customers from July 17

Thames Water: 16million customers asked to stop using hosepipes during heatwaves but no ban is in place

Yorkshire Water: 5.7million customers are told to 'use a watering can instead of a hose where you can'

The firm said the ban will remain in place until water resources recover sufficiently and demand returns to a sustainable level.

Stephen Plumb, asset strategy and capital delivery director at Affinity Water, said: 'We don't take a decision like this lightly, but with demand for water use at unprecedented levels, we need to act now to protect supplies, for our customers, especially those who are most vulnerable, for the communities we serve, and for the environment.

'We know a hosepipe ban is disruptive, and we apologise for the inconvenience this will cause. We would like to thank customers for their support so far this summer and for working with us to help protect our water supply. Every bit of water saved makes a difference.'

Earlier today, Anglian Water became the latest firm to bring in hosepipe restrictions, placing five million customers across eastern England under an imminent ban.

Anglian said today that customers will not be allowed to use hosepipes for watering gardens, washing cars or filling swimming and paddling pools from 1am tomorrow, but asked that people 'live within the spirit of these restrictions immediately'.

Dr Geoff Darch, head of strategic asset planning for Anglian, said: 'This year has been exceptionally hot and dry, and we're already into the third heatwave of the summer.

'Every day of sustained hot weather increases the challenge of balancing supply and demand, and we are now at the point where we need to ask customers to help by hanging up the hosepipe, letting lawns go brown, cars go dirty and using water even more wisely to help protect the environment and ensure water remains available for all customers.'

It comes hours after Cambridge Water announced a ban for the first time in three decades yesterday for its 350,000 customers which will come into force on July 17.

The first ban of summer was introduced by South East Water for 850,000 customers in Kent last Friday; while a Southern Water ban for one million people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight was activated this morning after being announced last week.

Several firms have also urged customers to take voluntary actions to limit their water use, although they have stopped short of introducing restrictions.

Thames Water has urged its 16million customers including those in Greater London to stop using hosepipes during the heatwave but has not imposed an official ban.

Yorkshire Water has told the 5.7million people it serves to 'use a watering can instead of a hose where you can' – although it does not anticipate activating a ban yet.

Severn Trent, Essex and Suffolk Water, Wessex Water and Portsmouth Water are also urging customers to use water wisely amid the heatwave.

Essex and Suffolk Water said it is closely monitoring water resources in Suffolk and preparing for all eventualities, although a hosepipe ban is not currently being introduced.

Kieran Ingram, water director at the firm, said: 'It takes a great deal of effort to turn rainwater into clean, safe drinkable water for everyday use, and the recent spell of hot, dry weather has led to a significant increase in water demand across Suffolk.

'Because of this, we need to formally appeal to our customers to show restraint with their water use and ask them to help us by considering how they use water.

'We're asking customers to help by using water wisely wherever possible. Small changes can make a big difference and could help reduce the likelihood of restrictions being needed later in the summer.

'We're continuing to tackle leaks and bursts and are doing everything we can to manage supplies, but we also need customers' help.

'If a temporary water use ban becomes necessary, we'll work closely with local communities to provide the right support. But by making wise choices now, our customers can help lower the risk of such restrictions being needed.'

Meanwhile a Wessex Water spokesperson said: 'Reservoir and groundwater resources are in a stable position after the wet winter and there is currently no prospect of a hosepipe ban in our supply region.

The Met Office forecast for London shows temperatures above the 28C heatwave threshold

'However, prolonged hot weather combined with high demand for water can make it more challenging to move water through our network and into customers' homes.

'We encourage customers to please be mindful of their water usage at this time.

'Making a few small changes, like swapping the hose for a watering can or re-using paddling pool water in the garden, can help ensure there is enough water to go around for everyone.'

A Severn Trent spokesperson said of water supplies in its coverage area: 'While there are no restrictions in place, we'd really appreciate everyone's support being mindful of how they use water.

'This week alone, an extra 203 million litres of water was used by customers in a single day, with average daily use up by 44 litres per person. Demand is also staying high for longer, with peak usage now continuing from 9pm until 1am.

'In North Staffordshire, the first water resources trigger has been reached, meaning we're asking customers there to take extra care with their water use.

'Small changes make a huge difference such as not running the tap for cold water and instead put a jug in the fridge, and leaving the lawn – it will bounce back when there's some rain.

'There are no restrictions in place in the Severn Trent region, and we'd like to reassure customers that we're working around the clock to keep supplies flowing. Your support in using water wisely will help protect supplies through the summer.'

And a United Utilities spokesperson said: 'There are no plans for any restrictions in the North West and our reservoir levels are above average for this time of year.

'Whatever the weather though, we always encourage our customers to use water wisely.'

As part of its response to growing pressure on water resources, the Government has announced a slew of reforms including plans for nine new reservoirs.

More than £104billion in private investment has been committed to cutting leaking pipes, building these reservoirs and other measures to secure supplies.

Ministers are also preparing to respond to a consultation on proposals to change building rules so new homes are fitted with water efficient appliances.

A Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) spokesperson said: 'Customers deserve a reliable supply, which is why we're investing in record infrastructure and nine new reservoirs, while our Water White Paper sets out long-term reforms for the sector to ensure assets are maintained and problems identified before they cause shortages.

'Hosepipe bans are a matter for water companies, but they can save water when supplies are stretched from peaks in demand.'

It comes as rail passengers faced ongoing disruption today due to the heat across the UK network as East Midlands Railway (EMR) continued its 'essential travel only' warning.

Customers were urged to travel before 12pm to avoid the highest temperatures, with regional services between Nottingham and Worksop and Nottingham and Leicester being suspended from that time to reduce the impact of the heat on the railway.

Great Western Railway, c2c, London Northwestern Railway, South Western Railway, Northern Transport for Wales and West Midlands Railway were also running amended services due to the weather.

High temperatures can cause rails to buckle, overhead electric wires to sag and lineside fires, while steel rails can exceed 50C when the air temperature is 30C.

Separately, industrial action by the TSSA union was impacting London Northwestern and West Midlands services both today and tomorrow.

Temperatures have now been above 30C in south-east England for five days in a row.

Wisley in Surrey has been the UK's hottest place for the past two days, with highs of 35.5C yesterday and 33.8C on Wednesday.

Are hosepipe bans the right response to prolonged heatwaves?

Prior to that, London was the hottest area for four days in a row – with 32.4C in Teddington on Tuesday, 34.0C in Teddington on Monday, 30.3C at Heathrow on Sunday, and 29.3C in Teddington on Saturday.

Parts of south-east England have now officially been in a heatwave since Saturday and forecasters believe the threshold will continue to be met well into next week.

The conditions could yet be record-breaking, given the historic 1976 heatwave lasted for 16 days in a row with at least 30C in London each day from June 23 to July 8.

The current heatwave is expected to peak today with highs of 36C in the South-East before easing slightly to 30C this weekend and 28C early next week.

But these temperatures will still be enough to hit the heatwave level, which varies around the UK but is 28C in London and must be recorded for at least three days.

Forecasters said conditions will turn slightly cooler but remain dry from next week in the South-East due to an easterly wind, while the focus for the hottest conditions will shift towards south-west England where there could also be thunderstorms.

Met Office deputy chief forecaster Tom Crabtree said: 'Many people will understandably want to know how long the current heatwave is likely to last.

'While temperatures are expected to ease across south-east England through the weekend and into next week, it won't be a straightforward end to the warm weather.

'High pressure is expected to remain in charge through much of next week, but it will gradually migrate northwards. This means that an easterly wind will become established in the south, and the focus for the hottest conditions will migrate towards the South-West.

'As a result, some places that have seen the highest temperatures during recent weeks will begin to cool. It will however remain very warm, especially in the South-West, and heatwave thresholds may continue to be met in places.'

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) updated its amber health alerts yesterday to cover the whole of England apart from the North-East – which has a yellow alert – until Sunday.

The amber alert means significant impacts are likely across health and social care services, including a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions.

Early harvests have begun with Waitrose announcing yesterday that it has officially commenced its earliest ever for wheat and oilseed rape at its Hampshire-based farm, the Leckford Estate.

The supermarket said the unprecedented early start is a direct result of unseasonably high temperatures, which have caused the crops to ripen much faster than usual this year. Traditionally, harvest season runs from late July through to October in the UK.

Britain's electricity grid operator issued another plea to the industry for more power generation, forecasting a tight period for electricity margins for yesterday evening over 'extreme temperatures' in Europe.

The National Fire Chiefs Council also flagged the increasing risk of wildfires this week, advising people to avoid using disposable barbecues in open countryside, park and moorlands.

Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Matt Jukes has called on the public to 'hold back' on non-emergency calls.

Speaking on LBC Radio today head of a weekend when England play again in the Fifa World Cup and temperatures are expected to remain high, he said: 'We're going to see more calls. We're going to see more drinking. I hope we're going to see more great goals for England, and we're going to see success.'

He added: 'Call us on the things we need to. Please hold back on the calls we don't need to take. Officers out there are melting in the heat but they will be there to come to you if you need us.'

In a post on X, the London force said people should only call 999 if there is 'an immediate danger to life, someone is using or threatening violence, or a crime is happening right now'.

The heatwave threshold is defined as three consecutive days at or above a set temperature

Meanwhile the London Fire Brigade said the Natural Hazards Partnership has decided the risk of wildfires in the capital will increase from 'elevated' to 'extreme' from tomorrow until at least Monday.

The assessment is driven by factors such as further prolonged dry weather and heat as well as wind speed and direction.

LFB assistant commissioner Tom Goodall said: 'The latest wildfire risk assessment indicates that if grass fires were to break out, the chance of them spreading more rapidly due to the weather conditions is greater.

How the Met Office defines a heatwave

The Met Office says a heatwave is defined as three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold.

The threshold varies across the UK - between 25C across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and South West England, and 28C in London and its surrounding counties.

'With so many of London's parks and open spaces close to properties and communities, it is vital the public take as much care as possible to prevent these fires starting in the first place. We have seen first-hand in London, as well as around the world, just how devastating the impact wildfires can have on livelihoods.

'That means no disposable barbecues in parks and open spaces, taking rubbish home with you if no bins are available and ensuring your cigarettes are discarded of properly.

'If you're having a barbecue at home, make sure it is on level ground and away from decking, fences, trees and balconies.'

Families, neighbours and carers are being urged to check in on people living with dementia, who can face serious risks from hot weather.

It comes after new analysis by the UKHSA found that 254 of the 1,504 heat-associated deaths in England during last summer were thought to be linked to dementia, accounting for around one in six of all heat-associated deaths.

The Alzheimer's Society said the figures highlight the increased risks that hot weather can pose for people living with dementia, who may be less able to recognise when they are thirsty, dehydrated or overheating.

NHS England warned that many of its ambulance services would be under 'sustained pressure' due to the heat which it has described as 'dangerous' for some people.

Meanwhile scientists at Europe's Copernicus Climate Change Service said June 2026 was the hottest June recorded for western Europe and the second warmest globally.

The RNLI has urged families to share essential safety advice after police reported nearly 30 deaths following water-related incidents over the May and June heatwaves.

The RAC has issued another warning to drivers as the breakdown service said it is seeing hundreds more incidents every day compared to normal July levels.

Rod Dennis, its road safety spokesman, said vehicles will again be facing extra strain during the hotter weather, especially older ones and those with underlying issues.

He also advised that drivers should carry out a 'few simple checks' before setting off, including ensuring coolant and oil are at the correct levels, checking tyres are in good condition and properly inflated, and not ignoring dashboard warning lights.

The UK set a provisional all-time June high of 37.7C on June 26 in Norfolk; while the highest May temperature on record was recorded on May 26, with 35.1C in London.
