Spain’s indomitable run in the United States served as another testament to their sustained excellence.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have been at the heart of Spanish football’s rise, providing the foundation for many of the nation’s greatest successes on the international stage.

As the most successful club in the world, Los Merengues boast a record 15 Champions League titles, eight more than any other team.

Six of those triumphs came since Spain’s European title in 2008. For further perspective, AC Milan, the second-most decorated club in Champions League history, have won seven.

Despite lagging ten titles behind their bitter rivals, three of Barcelona’s five Champions League crowns have also arrived since Spain’s breakthrough at Euro 2008.

They have won nine of the last 17 Champions League finals between them, cementing their status as the dominant force in European club football.

However, La Liga is more than just Barcelona and Madrid.

Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Villarreal have also played their part in improving Spain’s reputation on the continent, combining for nine Europa League titles over the past 17 years.

Sevilla became the first team ever to win three consecutive titles in Europe’s second-tier competition between 2014 and 2016, a remarkable milestone that has stood the test of time.

Different football philosophy

Spain’s World Cup victory didn’t come out of the blue. The 2025/26 season had already showcased the strength of the nation’s coaching culture and the influence of its football philosophy across Europe.

Former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique became the first manager in modern history to win back-to-back Champions League titles since Zinedine Zidane, adding to his ever-growing trophy collection at Paris Saint-Germain.

Lifting another Ligue 1 title was the easier part of the job.

Enrique’s countryman, Unai Emery, lived up to his tag as a ‘Europa League specialist’ by ending Aston Villa’s agonisingly long title drought, as they won their first major international trophy since the early 1980s.

Villa finished fourth in the Premier League, 20 points adrift of new champions Arsenal. And guess who’s at the Gunners’ helm?

Mikel Arteta steered the North London powerhouse to their first league title since 2004, beating his mentor Pep Guardiola to the punch in a battle between two Spaniards.
