There’s very little to separate Mexico and South Korea at the head of Group A after the first round of fixtures at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Both teams won their opening matchups against South Africa and the Czech Republic, respectively, though only one of these teams can take the upper hand at the summit following Thursday’s clash in Zapopan.

El Tri will once again have home advantage on its side as it looks to all but seal the deal and lock down a first-place finish in the pool. However, South Korea already displayed a certain standard of stubbornness after coming back from a goal down to beat the Czechs in its tournament curtain-raiser.
Key defender Cesar Montes will be unavailable for this encounter and is a huge loss for Mexico following his red card against Bafana Bafana. Javier Aguirre is likely to promote AZ Alkmaar defender Mateo Chavez in his place, though Edson Alvarez is another option after the team captain came off the bench in Mexico City last week.
On the other hand, South Korea boss Hong Myung-bo isn’t expected to have any squad setbacks and could name an identical team to the one that triumphed last time out.
