The reigning king of Europe is under pressure to set the record straight on Sunday when Spain takes on Saudi Arabia at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. La Roja were held to a shock 0-0 stalemate against Cape Verde in their opener, but still sit level with the rest of the teams in Group H following two opening-day draws.

Luis de la Fuente will not have been over the moon that his side failed to break down Cape Verde, who sit 65 places below them in the FIFA rankings. The Green Falcons sit marginally higher in the global pecking order, and Spain will be painfully aware of the side that upset Argentina at the last World Cup in Qatar.

The caveat is that Argentina did, in fact, go on to win the 2022 World Cup, though a loss here would put Spain’s chances of getting out of the group in major doubt. All the more reason for Lamine Yamal to make his first start of the competition following the injury he suffered towards the end of Barcelona’s season.

Athletic Club’s Nico Williams may also be in contention to start in place of Ferran Torres, with Victor Munoz still struggling with injury after it was announced Liverpool has agreed a deal to sign the forward. Center-back Abdulelah Al Amri scored Saudi Arabia’s opener in the 1-1 draw against Uruguay but will likely find himself preoccupied with just keeping Spain’s attack at bay in Atlanta.
