But things are about to get even better.
For the 2026–27, Wrexham are setting their sights firmly on promotion to the Premier League, the biggest and best league division in world soccer. If Welcome to Wrexham is already among the best FX shows on Hulu, then this time next year we could be talking about it as one of the greatest sports documentaries in TV history.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac still seemed grateful to be in the EFL Championship when they spoke to Screen Rant ahead of Welcome to Wrexham season 5 premiering on Hulu back in May. Almost three months on, things are getting serious, as Reynolds, Mac, and their club prepare for the games that will determine the outcome of season 6.
Wrexham AFC are making their first moves in the transfer market as they look to strengthen their squad ready for a Premier League promotion push in 2026–27. In the 2025–26 EFL Championship, Wrexham narrowly missed out on the sixth-place finish they needed to secure a spot in the Championship playoffs, the winner of which gets promoted to the Premier League.
In fact, had results gone differently for them on the final day of the season, they would have made the playoffs. However, Wrexham weren’t even expected to get close to this position, in a league that ranks as the seventh-richest in world soccer. This time around, though, things are different.
Now, everyone knows how close Wrexham can get to promotion. With new reinforcements to their playing squad, they’re expected to challenge for one of the EFL Championship’s top positions. If they finish in the top two, they’ll be promoted to the Premier League automatically. Meanwhile, finishing between third and sixth will give them another chance at promotion through the playoffs.
Wrexham Reaching The Premier League Would Be A Real-Life Sports Fairytale
It’s worth taking a step back to look at what Wrexham AFC has already accomplished in the five and a half years since Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds took over the club. Between 2022 and 2025, Wrexham secured three successive promotions, to go from the fifth tier of English football to the second tier in the shortest time possible.
They’re actually the first time in the 135-year history of the English Football League system to secure back-to-back-to-back promotions. Wrexham have never gone higher than the second tier of English football before, and their seventh-place finish in the EFL Championship in 2026 was the highest in the 162 years of their existence as a club.
If they do get promoted to the Premier League in 2027, it will be a real-life sporting fairytale, even if Hollywood does have a hand in making it happen. What makes Welcome to Wrexham such a great watch is its focus on underdog stories, from within the club’s playing squad to the ordinary fans who keep it running.
No underdog story would be bigger than Wrexham’s promotion to the richest non-franchise sports league in the world, overcoming bigger clubs with higher budgets and previous experience in England’s top division. Welcome to Wrexham season 6 should arrive on Hulu in May, but its story starts this month, with Wrexham AFC’s first game of the new Championship season.
