India vs Australia set up decisive Group A finish in 2026 Women's T20 World Cup semi-final race

India’s bid in the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup has reached a crucial juncture, with the team captained by Harmanpreet Kaur going up against Australia in what will be their last match in Group A on June 28.

Australia have almost secured a place in the semi-finals due to winning all of their four group matches and accumulating a run rate of +4.724.

Pakistan and Netherlands have been eliminated, whereas Bangladesh have slim chances of making it to the next round. So the fight will now be between India, Australia and South Africa.

Interestingly, after India's 5-wicket win against Bangladesh, South Africa face Bangladesh after trashing already-eliminated Netherlands by 88 runs.

How India can qualify for 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals

1. India beat Australia

Here, India will surely qualify for the semi-finals in case Bangladesh wins against South Africa. In case Proteas win, both the teams will have eight points each and the second semi-final berth from Group A will be determined on NRR.

2. If India lose to Australia

Here, India would have to rely on Bangladesh beating South Africa. In case Bangladesh wins, the second semi-final position would be determined by NRR as both India and South Africa would have equal points at that point.

3. If match is washed out

In case of a wash-out, given that there are no reserve days for group matches, India would have to rely on Bangladesh beating South Africa. If South Africa wins, India will be eliminated as they will end up below both Australia and South Africa.

How Australia can qualify for 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals

1. Australia beat India

If Australia beats India, then the team qualifies for the semi-finals automatically. A win will also help them seal the top spot in Group A and face the runners-up from Group B in the knockouts.

2. Even if Australia lose/match is washed out

Australia are in a good position even if they lose or the game is a wash-out. With their early victories, Australia are well protected by a good NRR advantage, while only India or South Africa can possibly go atop the group.

Generally, Australia is in a safe position going into the game, where all that they need is not to have a heavy loss.
