Cristiano Ronaldo's former boss at Al Nassr, Jorge Jesus, has been named as Portugal’s new head coach following the country’s World Cup last-16 exit.

The 71-year-old worked with compatriot Ronaldo as Al Nassr won the Pro League title last season.

The Portuguese federation confirmed the appointment in a post on its official X account, with Jesus’ contract reported to cover the next World Cup finals in 2030, where Portugal are a co-host.

Roberto Martinez stood down as Portugal coach following the defeat by Spain in the last 16, which brought an end to the team’s campaign in North America.

Jesus won three Portuguese league titles with Benfica in 2010, 2014 and 2015 and also enjoyed success in Brazil with Flamengo, where he won the league title and the Copa Libertadores in 2019.
