Jon Stewart turned President Donald Trump’s World Cup final appearance into an extended roast Monday night, mocking the president’s victory lap after Spain’s 1-0 win over Argentina before fixating on an unidentified man standing behind Trump and wondering whether America had just discovered “back-up Trump.”
Opening The Daily Show, Stewart summed up Sunday’s championship by joking that “the Spain-Argentina final was like a reverse Super Bowl, where the players spoke Spanish, and the halftime show was in English.”
He also took aim at the tournament’s first-ever halftime spectacle, featuring Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber and the Muppets, questioning why Sesame Street’s Count von Count had been dragged into a daytime event.
“You got all the Muppets to choose from, why would in God’s name make the vampire work during the day?” Stewart joked. “Not only is it in the bright glare of the afternoon sun, but for most of the game, the score was 0-0! You’re taunting this poor bastard! ‘I sat in traffic for one, two, three hours for this.'”
Stewart quickly pivoted to Trump, who attended the final and drew attention by lingering onstage during Spain’s trophy lift celebration.
“What the f*ck are you doing on the stage?” Stewart exclaimed. “It’s for the players! Goddamn! Why must everything be tainted by the overinflated ego of Cankles Muldoon? Why?”
The host then rolled footage of Trump speaking to reporters alongside Air Force One after the match, where the president declared the tournament was “four times greater than any FIFA ever held.”
“How do you hold ‘a FIFA’? How could our FIFA be four times greater than any other FIFA?” Stewart interjected before resuming the clip, in which Trump added: “That is probably about five times actually, they’re telling me today.”
“Is that what they told you? You know, they’re telling you that because everyone around you lies to you because you’re a little baby!” Stewart jabbed.
But Stewart abandoned that line of attack after spotting a man walking into frame behind the president.
“What’s up with the guy behind Trump? Can we see that again? Can you bring that out? Who the f*ck is this guy? Who the f*ck is this? Is this… What? Who in the world is it? Oh my God! Is that a back-up Trump? Is that – Wait a minute, wait. Hold on a second.”
“Wait, what? Wait, Who? What? Is that a back-up Trump or is that Trump?” he quizzed. “Wait, is the one we’ve been dealing with back-up Trump or is that Trump?!”
The bit carried over into Stewart’s next segment as he attempted to move on to the renewed Iran conflict, only for another image of Trump lingering on the World Cup stage to appear over a graphic of the region.
“God, you’re not in this graphic. You’re not in this graphic!” he shouted at Trump. “What! We have talked about this. You’re not in this graphic!”
“Get him out of the graphic,” Stewart playfully ordered producers.
