Jürgen Klopp has agreed on key points of a possible contract to take over as Germany men's coach, the German Football Federation (DFB) said on Saturday, with both sides confident of a deal with his current employer Red Bull.
Talks were held in New York on Friday between the former Liverpool coach and DFB president Bernd Neuendorf. DFB vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke, who knows Klopp well from their time together at Borussia Dortmund, also attended the meeting.
Klopp is in the US working as a TV pundit during the World Cup but had already signalled his interest in replacing Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following the last-32 exit to Paraguay.
A DFB statement said of the meeting: "During this constructive discussion, an agreement was reached on the key points of a potential contract.
"The talks will continue next week. Both sides are confident that the negotiations – subject to an agreement being reached with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull – can ultimately be concluded successfully."
The DFB statement made clear that a meeting of its full supervisory board and stakeholders would be needed to approve the contract.
Klopp is set to receive a contract to the 2030 World Cup and a salary only slightly higher than that of Nagelsmann, media have speculated.
The Bild newspaper reported that Klopp met the German football bosses at a hotel near New York's John F Kennedy Airport.
Photographs showed Klopp and his agent Marc Kosicke at a building entrance as well as Neuendorf and Watzke with their luggage. The meeting is said to have lasted more than four hours.
The DFB officials flew in from Frankfurt on Friday.
Klopp is contracted to Red Bull as their global head of soccer until 2029 but reports say there is a break clause if the DFB come calling.
If reports are correct, Klopp would give up his job at the drinks group's sports arm after just over 18 months - but remain a brand representative. Red Bull owns clubs across the globe including RB Leipzig and New York Red Bulls.
Germany's first international after a third straight men's World Cup debacle is scheduled for September 24 in the Netherlands. They continue their Nations League campaign at home to Greece on September 27. Serbia are also in their group.
Klopp was immediately named by the DFB as their preferred candidate following news of Nagelsmann's departure earlier this month.
The 59-year-old has been away from the touchline for two years having said he needed a break when leaving Liverpool, where he won one Premier League title in 2020 and a Champions League in 2019.
In a recent MagentaTV interview, he said: "I am more than recharged now, so I am ready."
Before his Liverpool stint, he won the German Bundesliga in 2011 and 2012 with Dortmund.
