The Reds are back at Anfield as they continue their preparations for the 2026-27 season.
On Sunday, for the first time under Andoni Iraola the Reds will take to the pitch at Anfield. It will only be a pre-season warm up, the club’s fourth of the summer after a brief swing through the United States that ended last weekend, but with most of the squad now ready to go after the World Cup there will be plenty of excitement.
Iraola’s Liverpool side remain a work in progress, with the shock signing of Ronald Araújo from Barcelona filling a hole in defence but still work to be done in attack and, depending on outgoings, in midfield and a worrying lack of positional depth. Yet the signs of a return to a heavier press and more vertical attacking game are there. Have been there in the three previous friendlies. Will be expected again tomorrow.
“I hope you all enjoyed a good summer break, and I hope you are all looking forward to Sunday’s game as much as we are,” Iraola wrote in his first matchday notes as a Liverpool manager. “This fixture, plus the games we have scheduled next week against Como, will be hugely beneficial for us as we start to look ahead to Newcastle.
“Our tour of the USA was a positive one, and also a really important introduction to the club for me and my staff. Now we are home, it is time to step up our preparations further and continue the hard work we put in. We now have virtually our entire squad together, which of course will be very important in the coming days and weeks.
“Victor Munoz, our new signing, joined us this week having been part of the Spain squad which won the FIFA World Cup last month, as did Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Alisson Becker. Alexis Mac Allister, the last of our World Cup players, will link up with us on Monday.”
After what was a very difficult 2025-26 season, change was clearly needed for Liverpool—for the players, for the fans, and for everyone associated with the club. A return of energy, a little more excitement and connection. So far, the signs on that front are at least positive, even if there clearly is still work to be done both on and off the pitch.
“Sunday is, of course, going to be a very proud day for my staff, and for me, as we take charge of our first home game,” Iraola added. “I have experienced Anfield before from the other side, and that was pretty special, but I know that it will be a completely different feeling as the head coach of Liverpool, and that is something I am really excited for.”
