Belgium and Jeremy Doku finally delivered on their tournament potential, dismantling New Zealand 5-1 in Vancouver to secure top spot in Group G on goal difference.
Leandro Trossard set the tone with an opener on 28 minutes before doubling his tally just after the break – and former Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne added a third on 66 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.
Romelu Lukaku – goalless heading into this game – finally got on the scoresheet on 86 minutes, before Alexis Saelemaekers rounded things off in stoppage time.
Elijah Just provided New Zealand‘s consolation with six minutes remaining but the All Whites were thoroughly outclassed.
Belgium had outshot New Zealand 18-0 at one point during the second half. After a woeful opening two games – a draw with Egypt and a goalless stalemate against Iran – the Red Devils qualified in style.
