Manchester City have contacted Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez over a potential move, according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano.
City are aiming to rebuild their midfield following Bernardo Silva’s departure to Real Madrid, while Tijjani Reijnders and Rodri could leave the club.
The Cityzens have signed Elliot Anderson and are also working on a deal for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi.
City have reportedly expressed their interest in Fernandez, but are not prepared to pay Chelsea’s asking price.
“In recent days, contact has taken place between Enzo Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, and Manchester City,” he said. “In these discussions, City made it clear that they are interested in Fernandez.
“Enzo Maresca is a big fan of Fernandez, with the pair enjoying a good relationship at Chelsea. Maresca had internally discussed the possibility of signing Fernandez even before reports emerged linking Rodri with a move away from City.
“Chelsea are happy with Fernandez and would only consider selling him for £120 million. City are not prepared to spend that much, meaning the deal would be complicated if Chelsea refuse to lower their asking price.”
The Blues may be unwilling to listen to offers for Fernandez late in the transfer window, meaning City need to step up their efforts as soon as possible.
Chelsea want their squad settled before their Premier League opening match at Fulham on August 24.
Fernandez resumed pre-season training on Monday following his involvement with Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly happy to keep Fernandez, but will not stand in his way if he decides to leave.
The 25-year-old could make his first appearance under Alonso in Chelsea’s final warm-up game against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
