- Man City looking to add depth to right-back options ahead of the 2026-27 season
- Matheus Nunes performed brilliantly last season but is a natural midfielder
- Enzo Maresca has held transfer talks with Man City sporting director Hugo Viana
Manchester City continue to monitor the situation of Feyenoord’s Givairo Read ahead of the formal opening of the summer transfer window, according to reports.
City have identified Read as a priority target to shore up their options at right-back ahead of the 2026-27 season, with club bosses keen to supplement Matheus Nunes and offer greater cover in a key defensive position.
Incoming Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is understood to discussed transfer plans with director of football Hugo Viana, with the Italian expected to be confirmed as Pep Guardiola‘s successor in the near future.
Nunes exceeded expectations at right-back – despite being a natural midfielder – last season and as City look to build on an impressive FA Cup and Carabao Cup double winning campaign, the Blues are seeking reinforcements in the area.
Now, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich and Manchester City are still ‘keeping a close eye’ on Feyenoord‘s 20-year-old right-back Givairo Read and his situation ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Dutchman is said to be on both clubs’ list as one option for the position, with the two sides having monitored the player since December 2025.
The recent departure of John Stones, who has previously operated at right-back, and Rico Lewis playing a bit-part role in the last 12 months, could push City into the market for fresh recruit.
Executives at the Etihad Stadium are believed to be keen on getting as much transfer business wrapped up before the FIFA World Cup kicks off across the Atlantic in a few weeks’ time.
City have already seen an initial bid for number one midfield target Elliot Anderson rejected by Nottingham Forest, who are demanding £100 million for the 23-year-old England international.
It remains to be seen whether Viana and co return with an improved offer for Anderson or move on to alternative midfield options, such as Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali.
City remain in talks with Tottenham over a sale for winger Savinho, who is expected to depart, with the likes of Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez, Omar Marmoush, James Trafford and Lewis also attracting interest ahead of the summer transfer window.
Outgoings will heavily determine the extent to which Viana and Maresca remake City’s squad for next season – after the Blues’ shrewd acquisitions of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi in January for a combined £85 million.
