Mauricio Pochettino has officially put pen to paper on a new contract extending his role as head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) through 2030, following glowing praise from President Donald Trump.
U.S. Soccer presented Pochettino with a new four-year deal after the World Cup, but the head coach deliberated over the decision until Monday. Pochettino guided the USMNT to the Round of 16 before enduring a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Belgium.
The USMNT players spoke highly of Pochettino despite the elimination, making it clear that they were eager to continue working and developing under the seasoned coach. Pochettino has now committed to staying with the national team, with Trump having been tremendously complimentary of him ahead of the tournament this summer, as per The Mirror US.
"Well, I just got to say you're a fantastic guy, a fantastic coach, and you're all about your record and your success, and I know how great the players are," Trump told Pochettino before the World Cup. "I think you've got a really good chance of going all the way."
In response, Pochettino said, "Thank you so much for your support, Mr. President. We are going to do everything to make proud, you and all the people here in this country."
Although Pochettino fell short of delivering an improbable triumph, the USMNT secured its group after a commanding 4-1 triumph over Paraguay and a 2-0 success against Australia. The USMNT also defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, but was overwhelmed by Belgium in a politically charged encounter.
USMNT forward Folarin Balogun received a red card against Bosnia, though FIFA subsequently overturned the dismissal in an unprecedented decision. Trump later acknowledged he had communicated with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, triggering widespread criticism and accusations of meddling.
The controversy cast a shadow over the USMNT and Balogun ahead of the Belgium game, as he was contentiously cleared to participate. Despite the distractions, it remained a solid showing from the USMNT, and U.S. Soccer maintains complete confidence in Pochettino.

"Mauricio and his staff believe in the future of soccer in the United States and our new project allows us to build on progress of the USMNT and the momentum of U.S. Soccer," said U.S. Soccer CEO and Secretary General JT Batson. "We know we have a lot of work to do to achieve our clear ambitions, including competing to win Men's World Cups and having soccer become the most played sport in every community.
"I couldn't be more excited that Mauricio and team are committed to partnering with all of us to do the hard work to bring those ambitions to life."
Pochettino also responded to the new contract, adding, "Working together with U.S. Soccer over the past two years, it has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the Men's National Team program even stronger. The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here.
"We are excited by the opportunity to bring all our experience and knowledge to even more areas of U.S. Soccer while helping strengthen the pathways for players, coaches and teams across the Federation. We want to try to have a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly and for that impact to extend beyond results on the field."
Pochettino's primary responsibility will be guiding the USMNT through World Cup qualification, while also steering the team through the Gold Cup in 2027 and 2029. The USMNT has yet to officially secure a spot in the next Copa America in 2028, though negotiations remain ongoing.
