Morocco are set to begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey with a tough opening fixture against Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil on Saturday at the New Jersey Stadium.
The Atlas Lions come into the tournament in strong form, having recently won the Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Senegal in the final. Their momentum has continued beyond that success, as they remain unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions. Since lifting the continental trophy, Morocco secured a 2-1 victory over Paraguay, followed by dominant wins against Burundi (5-0) and Madagascar (4-0), before earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Norway.
Morocco team news
Preparations for the tournament have not been smooth for head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, who has had to deal with several late injury setbacks.
Forward Abde Ezzalzouli suffered a knee injury during the friendly against Norway and has been ruled out of the tournament.
Defender Nayef Aguerd is also unavailable, as he has not recovered in time from a groin problem. In response, Morocco have brought in Marwane Saadane and Amine Sbaï as replacements for the injured players.
There is further concern in defence, with Noussair Mazraoui still considered doubtful after picking up a shoulder injury in the same match.
On the brighter side, captain Achraf Hakimi has recovered from a thigh issue and is expected to start. Morocco will depend heavily on his experience and leadership, along with key players such as Brahim Díaz and Sofyan Amrabat, as they prepare to take on a strong Brazilian side.
Morocco predicted lineup
Possible Morocco starting XI: Bounou; Hakimi, Diop, Riad, Mazraoui; Amrabat, El Aynaoui, Ounahi; Diaz, Saibari, El Khannouss
When will the match kick off?
The match will kick off at 11pm BST on Saturday, 13th June.
