Joao Palhinha is expected to return to Munich on Sunday for the start of Bayern’s pre-season, cooling talk of an imminent move to Aston Villa.

Reports that the midfielder was due at Villa Park have been played down. Florian Plettenberg reports that no agreement has been reached with any club at this stage.

The situation remains fluid, however. Villa retain an interest in Palhinha, particularly if Bayern were willing to sanction another loan. Benfica and Sporting are also keen on the Portugal international.

Palhinha expected back at Bayern as Villa links cooled

Bayern’s own preference complicates matters. The German champions are pushing for a permanent sale rather than a further loan, hoping to recoup part of the €50m they paid Fulham in 2024. Palhinha has already rejected permanent offers from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Villa’s interest is driven by necessity. Unai Emery has been left short in midfield after Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United, and with Amadou Onana sidelined by a serious knee injury sustained at the World Cup. Reinforcements are a clear priority.

The Midlands club can offer an attractive package. Villa provide Champions League football and a route back to the Premier League, where Palhinha spent last season on loan at Tottenham. Spurs opted against making that move permanent.

Benfica present a different appeal. Manager Marco Silva worked with Palhinha at Fulham and is eyeing a reunion, though the overall cost of a deal may prove prohibitive for the Portuguese club.

For now, the picture is unresolved. Plettenberg reports Villa and Benfica are Palhinha’s most concrete options, but with no agreement in place, his future will only become clearer once Bayern’s pre-season is underway.
