Ruben Dias is set to stay at Manchester City and is preparing for another season at the Etihad Stadium, despite having attracted interest from Real Madrid this summer, as per a new report.
The 29-year-old has been one of the most consistent and decorated defenders in the Premier League since arriving from Benfica in September 2020, winning four league titles, the Champions League and multiple domestic cups across six seasons that have cemented his standing as one of the finest centre-backs of his generation.
Real Madrid’s interest in Dias had been one of the more prominent storylines of the summer window, with the Spanish club’s new manager Jose Mourinho understood to have been an admirer of the Portugal international as he looked to reshape a defensive unit that had undergone significant changes at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.
Despite that interest, Dias has not sought a move and appears settled in his decision to remain in Manchester for the coming season, giving Enzo Maresca a significant boost as the new manager builds his defensive plans around one of the Etihad Stadium’s most influential senior presences.
Dias featured for Portugal at the FIFA World Cup in North America this summer, facing club teammate Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic when La Seleção met Croatia in the Round of 32, before eventually exiting the tournament in the quarter-finals.
Report: Dias stays as City confirm defensive stability
According to Sam Lee of The Athletic, while Dias has been of interest to Real Madrid this summer, the centre-back is now preparing for another season at Manchester City.
The update effectively closes the chapter on a saga that had generated significant attention in recent weeks, removing one of the more high-profile potential departures from the list of outstanding personnel questions Maresca must resolve before the new season begins.
Dias’s contract at the Etihad Stadium runs until 2027, leaving the club in a strong negotiating position had they ever wished to sell – but with Vitor Reis still developing and Marc Guehi only recently arrived in the defensive unit, retaining Dias’s experience and leadership for at least one more season was always the most sensible course for a club in the early stages of a transition under new management.
His decision to stay will be welcomed by director of football Hugo Viana, who has consistently prioritised continuity alongside new investment throughout his first summer in charge – and for Maresca, who worked alongside Dias during the treble season of 2022-23, it is the confirmation that one of his most trusted defensive leaders will be available to him when the Premier League campaign begins later this month.
