Nearly 2,000 food and beverage workers at SoFi Stadium voted to authorize a strike on Friday. Ninety-six percent of voters were in favor of the strike ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The workers are demanding salary increases and protection against subcontracting and job loss through automation. One of the biggest demands involves ensuring workers’ safety against federal immigration enforcement. Workers are protesting against sharing personal information like nationality and home addresses to FIFA for accreditation and want the right to walk off the job if federal immigration enforcement are present.
Negotiations between Unite Here Local 11 and Legends Global are expected to continue Monday. The goal is to agree on a labor contract that will satisfy both sides.
If both sides are unable to reach an agreement, the union’s co-president Kurt Peterson said workers will walk off the job to protest during the World Cup game between the US and Paraguay at SoFi Stadium on June 12.
Legends Global Has Contingency Staffing Plan If Agreement Is Not Reached
Even if the two sides do not reach an agreement that satisfies the SoFi Stadium workers, Legends Global said it has a contingency staffing plan to make sure there are no disruptions to fans during the World Cup.
“Legends Global has presented progressive wage proposals to Unite Here Local 11 throughout our negotiations and remains confident an agreement is within reach,” Legends Global wrote in a statement, per the Los Angeles Times. “While we expect a contract will be finalized in time, a contingency staffing plan is in place to ensure seamless operations and no disruption to fans. We remain committed to delivering an outstanding hospitality experience at the FIFA World Cup matches.”
The contingency plan involves hiring replacement staff. These staff would have to share the same personal information for accreditation that the SoFi Stadium workers are protesting against.
