House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) poked some fun at President Donald Trump on Thursday over Trump’s public gaffe at the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The president, who attended the tournament’s final match between Spain and Argentina on Sunday at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, made headlines after he appeared to linger on the stage with the Spanish team during its victory celebration and eventually had to be awkwardly ushered away.
“He’s always chasing attention. I mean, he disgraced himself after the World Cup final,” said Jeffries during a press conference in D.C. with House Democratic leaders on Thursday.
Trump had joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino on the stage on Sunday to hand Spain the tournament trophy after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0. But instead of stepping away after handing away the trophy, an oblivious-looking Trump hovered near the edge of the stage. Infantino later scampered across the stage to try and guide Trump out of the frame while the team celebrated the big win.
However, Trump — who was also booed multiple times at the game — stayed onstage and smiled in the front row during Spain’s team photos. The team apparently edited him out later.
Jeffries likened Trump to “the old man in a club that no one wanted around and he’s the only one that couldn’t figure it out.” He then slammed the president for launching the U.S. into the ongoing war in Iran.
“So we can’t — there’s nothing that he’s saying right now that any of us can take seriously, and that’s unfortunate because he’s gotten us involved in a war that has now cost the lives of 18 brave service members in Iran,” he said.
The U.S. death toll has climbed to a total of 18 service members, with hundreds of others wounded since the war began in late February.
Meanwhile, the White House posted footage from Trump’s World Cup final appearance on X Tuesday, absent any trace of the president’s weird onstage moment.
