This July 4 is an important day not only in American history but in world history. The country celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and all eyes will be on the events to commemorate that moment.
NFL fans will move on from that on Sunday and begin to focus on their teams' training camps, which will open for most in approximately three weeks.
The New York Giants will begin their training camp at The Greenbrier in West Virginia this year due to a mixture of circumstances. Their headquarters, the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which is adjacent to MetLife Stadium, is undergoing a scheduled facelift and won't be ready until mid-August.
Then, there is the hangover the area will be dealing with after MetLife hosts the FIFA World Cup finale on July 19. The area, and the stadium itself, have to be snapped back into shape after making alterations to satisfy FIFA regulations.
The Giants will begin camp on July 23, when rookies, veteran quarterbacks, and designated injured players report. The rest of the club will report five days later. The Giants will hold their first training camp workout on Thursday, July 30, which will be open to the public.
The Giants currently have a full roster of 90 players, heading into camp. They will be making 37 personnel decisions between the start of camp and the NFL's August 30 roster deadline, when the initial 53-man roster is due.
Teams will then be able to claim waived players until 1:00 p.m. the next day, August 31. On September 1, teams can begin to form their 16-man practice squads.
The Giants open their three-game preseason schedule on Saturday, August 15, at 1:00 p.m. against the Minnesota Vikings at home, followed by a trip to Miami to play the Dolphins on Saturday, August 22, at 4:00 p.m.
Big Blue concludes the preseason by facing the New York Jets on Friday, August 28, at 7:30 p.m. at MetLife. The Jets will serve as the home team in that game.
The Giants open their regular season on Sunday, September 13, at 8:20 p.m. against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
