📈 Why Stephen Eustáquio is Canada's vital link this summer

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already offered up one historic moment after another this summer, and Canada wasted little time adding to that number with their 1-0 stoppage-time win over South Africa.

In a clash of two nations that achieved knockout football for the first time on the grandest stage, it was Les Rouges who bested Bafana Bafana to another historic achievement: a first-ever knockout stage win, courtesy of midfield maestro Stephen Eustáquio.

Now plying his trade with LAFC in MLS after a steady rise across Portuguese football that ultimately took him to a four-year stint with domestic giant FC Porto, the Ontario native has become arguably the most important piece of the jigsaw puzzle under Jesse Marsch.

After committing his allegiance to Canada in 2019 and turning down the opportunity to feature for Portugal after turning out for their U21 side, Eustáquio has become the command and control center behind credible forwards and wide attackers that help make up their own 'Golden Generation.'

His all-action performance against South Africa is one of the best-ever produced by a Canadian on the international stage, and in doing so, matched Italian legend Andrea Pirlo as just the second player to create five chances from set-pieces in a World Cup knockout fixture.

Beyond his vaunted ability in dead-ball situations, Eustáquio managed to win possession on six occasions, hit five of seven crosses (most), win five duels, complete four passes into the final third, win three tackles, and create two big chances (per Squawka); all before his match-winning effort.
