Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal fell to the eventual champion Spain in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup. At 41, Ronaldo confirmed the obvious.
“This will be my last World Cup,” Ronaldo said of his all-time record sixth World Cup tournament, additionally noting, “The day will come [when I retire from international football]. But I’ll be honest. Whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience.”
Whenever that day comes, Ronaldo will walk away as the all-time leading goalscorer. The lone blemish on his resume is the absence of a World Cup trophy, but Ronaldo isn’t leaving this summer empty-handed.
Ronaldo is a married man
After days of speculation, including Ronaldo fans crashing the wrong wedding, Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez announced their marriage on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The couple jointly posted an Instagram photo showing their hands sporting new wedding bands:

According to PEOPLE, Ronaldo and Rodriguez wed in a “civil ceremony” described as “a private and intimate moment” in Cascais, Portugal, on Tuesday.
Their wedding came exactly one year after Rodriguez announced her engagement to Ronaldo. “Yes, I do,” she captioned an Instagram photo showing a truly gobsmacking diamond ring. “In this and in all my lives.”
Ronaldo and Rodriguez, a 32-year-old model, have been together since 2017 and share six children together. Their newborn son, twin brother to Bella, died in April 2022.
What’s next for Ronaldo?
Ronaldo, who plays for Al Nassr, will open the 2026-27 Saudi Pro League club season against Al Fateh in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. He signed a two-year contract extension with Al Nassr in June 2025. Ronaldo previously starred at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus.
Outside of soccer, Ronaldo is developing a scripted drama series entitled Day 1s, as first reported by British tabloid The Sun. He’s billed as an executive producer and star.
