Champions League titleholder Paris Saint-Germain will face off against Europa League champion Aston Villa in a contest to determine Europe’s true ruler on Wednesday. The two teams will duke it out to decide this year’s UEFA Super Cup destination as Villa in particular aims to build on its first continental crown in more than 40 years.

PSG travel to Salzburg this week as the dominant force of European soccer for more than a year, having won each of the past two Champions League titles in a row. Les Parisiens defeated Arsenal in May to cement their status as Europe’s finest, while the Villans dominated Freiburg to mark their biggest title success in decades.

Unai Emery will now take on his old employers in a bid to prove riches aren’t everything, particularly after selling off around $270 million worth of talent this summer. Two of those who helped make up that total – Morgan Rogers (who has joined Chelsea for $158m) and Youri Tielemans ($47m to Manchester United) scored across the two legs when these teams met for the first time in 2025.

Former Villa left-back Lucas Digne could face off against his old team after returning to Paris this summer, some 10 years after he departed. Maghnes Akliouche may also be eyeing a debut under Luis Enrique after he moved to PSG from AS Monaco in a $55 million deal.
