The head referee for Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final was once arrested at a “sex party,” but insisted he was there by accident and was not involved.
A Thursday report from Daily Mail took a closer look at a May 2020 case involving Slovenian ref Slavko Vincic, who’s been tapped as the head ref in Sunday’s match between Spain and Argentina. That year, Vincic was arrested as part of a prostitution raid in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The “leader” of the prostitution ring was also arrested and pleaded guilty to international enticement to prostitution.
Vincic, on the other hand, was eventually released after telling police he was there for a business meeting. The report read:
He told Slovenian outlet Vecer that he had nothing to do with the group. ‘I found myself on this ranch by chance. I have my own company, I was in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a business meeting,’ he said. ‘I accepted an invitation to lunch, which turned out to be my biggest mistake. I regret it. I was sitting at a table with my company, all of a sudden the police came and what happened, happened. ‘I have nothing to do with the group that was arrested and detained, nor do my business partners. Yes, they really took us to the police, asked [us] as witnesses, when it turned out that we didn’t even know them, we were able to go.’
The president of Slovenia’s Association of Football Referees also came to Vincic’s defense, saying the referee simply “found himself in this place at the wrong time.”
