There are certain partnerships that just make sense; others are more peculiar. Of all the potential matchings in the art world, an exhibition that places sports, specifically soccer, on its curatorial pitch is an unusual occurrence. But such trepidatious ventures like this one are becoming a staple at Elise Seigenthaler Gallery. Perhaps this should come as no surprise for a new establishment on the Chicago art scene, where curatorial wagers are the fodder needed for a reputational stake.
Appropriately devised to coincide with the ongoing FIFA World Cup, “The Soccer Show: A Celebration of the World Cup” brings together eight artists’ sculptural and painterly renditions of one of the globe’s most popular pastimes. And somewhat surprisingly, soccer offers a conceptual pass that is well delivered, thematically versatile, and refreshingly fun.
Like with any sports team, this artistic roster has its stars and also its substitutes. Leading the standouts is Modou Dieng Yacine’s Champion Series #1, an oil paint on paper of a silhouetted figure dressed in a checkered black and white top. The patterned symbolism is a head-turner, but the scratchy brushwork leaves an almost haphazard quality to the work, adding an even better dynamism. Then there’s Sébastien Johnson’s impressionistic tilt that has captured the auratic ambience of onlooking fans in zealous glee. In one painting, a mass of Argentinian felicity dominates, populated by supporters adorning Lionel Messi’s iconic jersey, and in another, The Chicago Fire, Section 8, a glow of magentas, fuschias, and crimsons sets ablaze local jubilation for the hometown club. The encaustic on paper panel selections by Duncan McGillivray-Smith are a far more subdued portrayal of the activity: pickup games with friends and nights filled with self-practice.
For casual and lifelong enjoyers of soccer and art, there is now a place to kick off new and old appreciations. Remember that in both worlds, the key to success is finding the right pace and enough stamina. Fortunately, the gallery has found both, a good touch indeed.
